I too had serious attacks being on 400 mg of Allopurinol for almost 2 years. I had large tophi deposits surgically remove from my big toe joints during that time. My uric acid level was down to 4.5..the lowest it would go with 400mg of Alloputinol…with red meat, high fructose corn syrup, shell fish and alcohol removed from my diet. While we were in transition to Uloric waiting for a flare up to subside I read a couple stories of a couple people having to stop all fructose being sugar and fruit from their diet and their attacks stopped. When I did that my attacks stopped. Now I don’t know if it was a coincidence or what but when my flare ups stopped I switched to Uloric and since I have not had a flare up. It has been about 90 days. I recently ate an apple between a meal and the next day my foot swelled alittle and had very mild pain. So I’m not sure what that was. I had a couple bites of apple pie and no problem..so I’m testing the waters so to speak. All I know is that with that being said I see some light at the end of the tunnel. My Uric adic check two weeks ago was 3.7. My Rhum told me before I would have to learn what my triggers are and I think now I can learn from here. Hope you can figure it out. I wouldn’t wish it on anybody..its the worst pain I ever experienced!!

Hello…from a chronic gout attack sufferer..I will share my experience. I had it bad, finally at 58 years old my reg doc sent me to a rheumatologist. I have had surgery on both my feet to have uric acid crystal build up on the inside of both big toe joints. I thought I had bunions..nope gout. I was having attacks thinking it was from bunion pain. My Rheum stopped me of all meds and gave me steroids to make it through the attack. then she put me on 400 mg Allopurinol..I took it in the morning. She told me to cut out red meat, shellfish, high fructose corn syrup and alcohol. I did 3 of them but still enjoyed my vodka. I still was getting pounded with gout, toes knees wrist feet ancles etc…wouldn’t stop! So I stopped drinking any alcohol period..that didn’t work. I had started with 9 uric acid level and we got it down to 4.5 but my rheum was determined to get my acid level lower. I would take a taper of prednisone for about a week then it would come right back. She decided to switch me to Uloric after my currant attack was gone then start the Uloric at 80mg. I didn’t feel I was going to have any window to switch from Allopurinol to Uloric because my attacks were coming and going like every other day or two, it seemed. I went on another frantic internet search looking for a trick to stop the attacks. In the mean time I sampled a couple margaritas, and I sure paid for that!! My knee developed gout and tophi was aspirated from the joint. My rheum had said I would have to find my triggers..I found one… Searching for a solution to my attacks, waiting for a break so I could switch to Uloric, I read a couple testimonials about a couple guys who stated when they stopped all fructose..sugar fruit anything with sugar their attacks stopped. Ok I did that and they stopped. I got a few days in without pain and switched to 80 mg of Uloric..no problems had my blood work done and my acid level was still at 4.5 but was gout free. Went in for a check up and shared my “sugar free” diet with no flare ups and my rheum said to stay off sugar for now and upped my Uloric to 120 mg a day…I am now still gout free waiting to have my kidney, liver and uric acid level checked to see if my uric acid level dropped I will have my blood work up Nov 15 2017 to see where I’m at. She indicated I may be able to start to eat fruit again, if we can lower my uric acid level..not sure about that yet! For now it’s no alcohol (little over 1 year) red meat shellfish or any type of fructose off the menu..boring!!! Sorry I was a desperate person looking to get my life back..not there yet but a least gout free. I hope at least one person can help themselves rid the pain with my story..thats how I found the way, someone else’s story. Will update again.

Hello again..As I mentioned in my earlier post my Rheumatologist wants me to switch to Uloric when I have 3 weeks of no attacks. I didn’t think three weeks would happen. Being my UA levels have been 4.5 or lower and no red flags with liver and kidney check ok , I have read info here and everywhere, how to stop it…well since 4 days ago I have been gout free…???..I read where a few cases it took eliminating all fructose, fruit and all…no sugar period!! I stopped all sugars 4 days ago..no fruit no added sugar…coincidence?? I don’t know, all I know the last 4 days I have been pain free. I am waiting to see if it holds..my best hope yet! As happens to me usually..the minute I say things are alright, Bam..back to Ibuprofen and joint rest. She has me on 5 mg prednisone and 6 mg Colchicine daily so go figure..will report back in a few days…not sure I want to start over with Uloric??

Update on attacks won’t stop with Allopurinol

Hello…reporting back on my visit with my Rheumatologist Tues. I have to clarify my wrong information…I had stated I was told my blood level was at 6.5, I was actually at 4.5..I don’t know where the 6.5 was from, I guess I heard it wrong. Anyway she is putting me on Uloric 80mg to start with colchicine daily. My UA level had been in the 3.8-4.5 range the last few readings. I cannot start the Uloric until my current attack in my knee is gone. Well the knee attack is now 95% gone after 5 days of veggies fruits yogurt milk and lots of water..more than I ever drank. So now I thought I bruised the ball of my foot, waiting for my shoe insert adjustment, and last night..Bam…I’m pretty sure gout has returned to my underside of my second toe, and maybe, I thought, I had bruised the ball of my foot…I can’t start the Uloric ( if I can afford it) until my flare ups stop. I am supposed to get on the Colchicine when the pharmacy has it ready. Thoughts comments??

Thanks for the response..I have a call into my Rheumatologist..following up with your suggestions. I need to confirm my uric acid level readings from the last few checks..I know they told me (nurse) that I was in the normal uric acid level at last read 6.5. I remember when I had my previous serious attack with tophi aspiration that she said it was 3. Confused..My liver and kidneys checked out ok per my GP and Rhuem. My currant attack has put me in bed,I couldn’t bed my knee to sit. No prednisone this time just advil, that saved me going to the ER. Today I can bend it a little. I stressed out for the last three days not wanting to put anything in my mouth but tons of water and some tart cherries. Ended up with a plate of salad with a tiny bit of dressing as grilled chicken was fed to my family. Anxious to communicate with my Dr. I kinda explained to the messenger on the phone this a.m. Let ya know what happened. ( I told her 6.5 may be ok without gout but not with) FYI
