Thanks no tofu and pea protein a definitely not my only sauces. I also eat beans and chickpeas and lentils. It is a myth about vegans and protein though because my B12 levels are perfect and a lot of people over eat on protein which is not good for you either. I love my food too much to be one of these vegans to ever get undernourished!

I will rethink the 800 calories a day it’s just that I’m getting to the stage but I will try anything and I will not pooh pooh a diet until I have tried it if that makes sense?

To maintain weight I need to eat 1800 calories a day based on my current lifestyle so I’m going to drop 500 calories a day and just stick to 1300 but count everything and see what happens.

Hello there thanks for your reply! I totally agree with you about not letting out dictate my life and I think I have done that sometimes. I do not drink alcohol, have been on allopurinol 100 mg for well over a year now. I’m due to get my uric acid tested next week but my last results have all been good. I have been reintroducing certain foods that I was avoiding to see what happens and all has been fine. I am currently trialling pea protein and I’ve given up the looking on Google because all I ever see is negative words associated with foods that I want to eat! I tried to put things in perspective and I’m sure that when advice says to avoid pea protein they are talking about excessive amounts not a 15g serving.

I’m going to give Atkins ago I have emailed the UK version and they have told me that I must go straight to face too which allows a higher carb amount because I’m vegan so I will follow that advice. I will also have a look at a reduced calorie diet perhaps I will try 800 calories if I cannot cope with it it’s no problem I will just stop. I know I do need to reduce my calories and I’m probably guilty of not counting them correctly. You can just become very stressful sometimes when you’re even counting lettuce leaves life’s too short lol! I’m also looking at Slimming World because although you are told what you can and can’t eat the foods that you can eat you can eat in abundance. I do know from past experience that when I try depriving myself it makes my eating disorder worse.

That is really good advice about drinking more water and perhaps up in the allopurinol. I’m not sure there is it is the allopurinol that has caused my weight gain there is no scientific evidence I’m just going on what I’ve noticed over the past year. Luckily I drink plenty of water anyway it’s pretty much the only drink I have apart from tea and coffee. I will report back here if I get any results as it will be interesting. There are times when I think I would love to have surgery I know that sounds insane as I am not big enough at 12 stone. I have to accept and I’ll admit it here that food is my obsession and always has been for some people it may be shopping for clothes I am always happiest when I’m in a supermarket. Food has always ruled by life and having gout unfortunately made me become very obsessive over worrying about whether what I eat was going to call gout I am getting better with that.

Thanks again for your great response

Please help me lose weight after starting allopurinol

I hope somebody can help me here I’m desperately trying to lose weight. Since starting allopurinol last year I have gained a stone (UK measurement = 14 lbs) within that time and I’ve not changed my eating habits. I’m following a sensible controlled diet and exercising and I’m not shifting ยฃ1.

I have thought about giving Atkins ago now before everybody shouts at me and says no I am vegan so it will be different. I will be eating lots of protein sources from tofu pea protein etc all of which I tolerate well and have not caused any gout flare ups. I just wondered if it would be sensible though as I know Atkins is linked to gout but the low carb is only really low in the very beginning few weeks and then you reintroduce higher amounts. I know people will probably tell me I need to just eat a balanced diet and that is what I have been doing but I’m not losing any weight and getting very depressed over it.

I have also looked into the 5:2 diet plan which has since been relax slightly to allow 800 calories instead of 500 2 days a week. No I know that fasting has been linked to raised uric acid levels but would 800 calories a day be classed as actual fasting because I would have thought fasting is when you have no calories or extremely low amount as in 200-300 etc per day?

I am prepared to take the risk of a gout attack on here that sounds crazy but I just want to know for my own benefit if these will help me lose weight and avoid flare up because if that’s the case then I will of course follow them until I lose the weight I want to lose. If I don’t try them for fear of getting out I’m just going to be stuck in a rut and I really don’t want that. So I really would welcome any scientific evidence that links the plans I’m thinking of following to erased increase of getting out and not if that’s ok lectures about dieting and weather diets work. Incident in the last year I have also followed Weight Watchers for two months and that did not work either. I’m really not sure what else I can do.

Thanks in advance sorry about all the punctuation mistakes lol

Thanks I guess I’m just feeling down in the dumps after my fall I spoke to my mum about it and she thinks I should concentrate on healing my poor ribs right now rather than dieting! Maybe I will look into the 5:2 when I’m a bit better. Luckily my cholesterol is normal my blood pressure is low as is my blood sugar so I have been told that I’m very healthy otherwise. I’m normally very happy when I’m around 11 stone and because I’m quite well proportioned with a fairly small waist I actually look really at slim 11 stone, so I’ve never worried about getting to an impossible weight or BMI. I hear if women who are 8 or 9 stone and I don’t think I’ve seen that since I was a child! I wonder if 100mg of allopurinol would be responsible for weight gain tho as it is such a low dose.

Sorry I’m not 54 lol I meant to say I am 5 foot 4! I’m 41. Thank you for your answer by the way and for not lecturing me about dieting. If I hear one more smug person say it’s calories in vs calories out I will probably scream! Exercise in the past for me whilst help me tone up I’ve never given me much in the way of weight loss. Also falling down stairs means that it’s virtually impossible right now to do much apart from drag myself around the house!

Thank you I’m only planning on doing it for a week initially just to see how I get on bearing in mind it’s only two days of the week that you fast. I will make sure not to do them on consecutive days. I’ve read a few reports from people with gout who have followed this diet successfully and not had any issues with uric acid. They have made sure that they stay well hydrated but I never have any problems with that cause I drink plenty of water anyway. The way I see it what I’m doing at the moment is not sustainable for me as I feel very miserable and even though I’m eating sensibly my weight is just stuck. I could not do a no food fast it just would not be possible for me as I have previously suffered with bulimia and I’ll be honest and say that I do have issues over body image that will never go away. I’m 54 and currently nearly 12 stone I normally try to stay away from diet fads and all the nonsense in the new year about detoxing which in my opinion is a load of bull. But I’m at the stage where I’m willing to try anything and I know that there is some science behind this diet though how reliable it is I don’t know. It makes sense that my allopurinol thank you for that suggestion perhaps on the days that I fast I will take 200mg rather than my normal 100 mg. I’m pleased to report that I haven’t had any gout attacks for a few months now I still get twinges and pain around the area sometimes but I’m pleased to still be on 100 milligrams. Not sure if it is something I’ll be staying on for Life allopurinol but I’m guessing it is I just hope it hasn’t been responsible for my weight gain.

    5:2 Diet For Gout

Hi there I had a question about the 5:2 diet. Previously I didn’t think I would be able to manage it on the fast days having only 500 calories but they have upped it to 800 calories. No I would prefer not to have any lectures about whether I should or shouldn’t diet the best way to lose weight etc I really want to lose a stone for myself and my health as I’ve put on quite a bit recently. I am unable to exercise at the moment due to a bad injury to my ribs and arms. Also have painful knees as well due to a fall that has really screwed me up! I would just like to give this diet I go for a week or so and see what happens so I would just like to know as I have heard that fasting can raise uric acid levels what they actually mean by fasting. 800 calories a day while incredibly low is not the same as fasting that some people do which means eating nothing and that’s something I could not do. If I drink plenty of water and eight sensible foods with good levels of potassium on those days I just wondered what the evidence is or if there is any about fasting and uric acid as I have heard conflicting reports with some suggesting that fasting can help gout. I would be grateful if anybody has done this Diet before thank you very much

Thank you have other results to go by as well last year which was my first gout attack for years I had my levels checked and it was 0.4 mmol so obviously a little high started allopurinol February of this year and by April it will come down to 0.3 so this tells me that it’s steadily keeping down now which is definitely good news especially as I’m on a low dose of 100mg

    Serum urate level current

Serum urate level current share with you all the results of my recent blood test liver and kidney and everything all fine

A few months ago it was 0.27 mmol there has crept up slightly to 0.29 mmol but I know that still puts me safely in the normal zone should I be mindful of the slight increase or not worry too much about slight fluctuations? thank you in advance I have recently returned from Turkey where it is extremely hot 45 degrees most days

Thank you very much to both of you for your detailed answers. sorry I didn’t explain my exercise very well water walking is just that walking in the swimming pool, normally in the shallow End working up to walking in the slightly deeper end the water takes the way so I presume it will be good for any sort of foot or leg injury.

Personally I think the vegan diet being bad for gout one of the aspects is vegans who do don’t supplement and don’t get enough calcium I’ve seen vegans are go to restaurants and a happy just to have a plate of chips or salad I do take a multivitamin supplement the dairy-free milk I take is fortified with calcium and all my blood test shows that I am not deficient in anything.

I will have no trouble getting them through customs have been taking multivitamins for the last 7 years and going on holiday to different parts of the world you should see the stuff my mum takes in her mini suitcase it’s like a drugs cabinet lol the main thing that worries me is the heat I don’t think my uric acid has ever been that high.

My Vacation Plan for Colchicine, Diet, and Exercise

Just wanted to run this by you all I’m off to Turkey on Friday for 10 days looking forward to it staying at an all-inclusive hotel. I visited Turkey many times before so I know that the hotels don’t tend to offer much in the way of soya products for my vegan diet for dairy free cheese etc I would eat plenty of beans chickpeas hummus fresh fruits and salads from the hotel buffet

I will also buy some dairy-free milk that they do sell on the supermarket to keep my calcium levels good. Exercise Wise I’m not planning on anything strenuous and can’t swim at the moment but I’m planning on doing water walking do you think that will be beneficial and not harm my gout?

Also I plan to take a preventative dose of colchicine as really do not want gout to flare up do you think this is a good idea thank you ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you yes, I didn’t mean it would be something regularly eaten but when I see adverts for new Quorn vegan products I don’t want to make myself miserable but telling myself “I can’t eat that” do you know what I mean? I am considering looking at the Slimming World plan to get some excess weight off it is quite good for vegans and I think will encourage me to eat a wider range of plant proteins.

There is nothing wrong per se in just wanting a change sometimes I like lentils chickpeas beans etc but I do get bored and I’m not one of these perfect vegans that just lives off the land. occasionally I do fancy a processed vegan burger or ice cream I don’t drink don’t smoke and to be honest I need a couple of vices now and then that’s why I asked about Colin I saw an advert yesterday for the corn nuggets and just thought you know what I really fancy that sometimes I just don’t feel like lentils

^ this plus lots of other stuff online, lentils keep coming up as something that should be consumed in moderation this is why I am confused, as why would it be bad to eat Quorn also in moderation? I do eat processed soya in moderation for example Linda Mcartney sausages, but not every day and I balance them out with plenty of vegetables. this is why I get so confused and frustrated lol

    Hello there,
It seems to have died down in the last day or so. So maybe it was a tingle relating to gout, which I seem to be keeping at bay at the moment. Although the gout foot in question is still looking suspicious, i.e. the toes are puffy compared to the non gout foot.

No pain today though which is good.

I don’t know about specific tests I just know that everything came back normal and my doctor said everything was fine. Most vegans I know get all their proteins from soya, beans, vegetables and also through combining foods. I am not a good example of a vegan as I have had an eating disorder. I also know many non vegans who eat a very bad diet, and while many concentrate on protein, a lot neglect fibre for example. I am weary of eating too much protein I just try to stick to the recommeneded daily amount as too much makes it harder to excrete.
