    Gout Research SLEEP APNEA

I just read in the NYTimes that there is a strong connection between gout and sleep Apnea. I have both and believe there is a connection.

“New research has found that obstructive sleep apnea — a disorder in which breathing stops and starts during sleep — is associated with an increased risk for gout, a common cause of painful arthritis.

Scientists studied 15,879 patients with apnea and 63,296 matched controls without, following them for an average of almost six years. Over that time, 4.9 percent of people with apnea developed gout, compared with 2.6 percent of those without the disorder.

Both disorders are associated with obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and other conditions, but after controlling for these and other factors the independent association of apnea with gout was still evident. The study is in Arthritis & Rheumatology.

The mechanism is unclear, but reduced oxygen supply during sleep encourages the production of uric acid, and the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints is what causes the inflammation and pain of gout.

Apnea can be treated with continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, in which the patient wears a mask at night to allow easier breathing. There are drugs and diet restrictions used to treat gout.

The lead author, Milica Blagojevic-Bucknall, a lecturer at Keele University in England, said that this observational study does not prove cause and effect. Still, she added, “It’s possible that people who use CPAP could reduce the risk or severity of gout.”

Doc took me off diclofenac because he thinks it is causing a problem with my creatinine. I’ll ask for more details, like numbers etc

An update: Since March 2918, UA levels down to 5.9 from 9.4 (I thought it was 8.6). So I’m happy. Doc took me off Declofenac because he thinks this has caused creatinine to worsen (no further explanation). I’ll continu with Uloric 40mg for now with another test in a month.

I just came across this thread and decided to jump in. May or may not be useful. Prior to knowing I had gout, I had pain in foot that I thought was my bunion growing as I’d had pain before in the area. I was going for physical therapy for an unrelated reason and mentioned it to my PT who kind of laughed and said bones grow very slowly. She suggested gout. Came to GoutPal and read everything I could. The pain was excruciating so I went to doc. UA blood test confirmed with an 8.6 UA result. I went on Allopurinol. This was 8 weeks ago. He put me on Uloric, 40mg and Dicofenac, 75 mg. Going for another blood test later this week.

I’d love feedback on what you think about this regimen

    Hope it helps someone.

    Allopurinol vs Uloric

    1. The price difference is huge: $ 1.90 for Allipurinol vs $98.00 for Uloric (each a 30-day supply). My doc switched to Uloric because he thought it would remove tophi better. I did fine on Allipurinol. Seem fine, too, on Uloric.

    2. What other differences are there?

My testing for uric acid in the blood: 8.6 in mid-May. Next test will be in 2 weeks.

Hi, My name is Patti and I had my first gout attack about 2 weeks ago. my doc took blood and my number was 8.something. High, I now know from your website. I’m reading everything to learn. I took the how acidic are you test…one of the ads. It led me to another site that was highly marketing supplements. Just so you know.

Thank you very much for this website as it is highly educational. I knew nothing about gout; thought it was the “rich man’s ailment”, but know better now.
